Sister Wife - Book

I just finished 'Sister Wife' a novel that I was supposed to read for English. We were allowed to pick a book with a 'White Pine' sticker on the binding, and I didn't like the first book that I was reading - so I picked this one - also I've read Shelley Hrdlitscka's novel 'Dancing Naked' and I loved it - so I figured I'd give this one a shot.

A quick break-down of the book. It takes place from the perspective of three girls, one thirteen, one fifteen, and one seventeen.

Two of them (the youngest two) were born into a polygamist family, and the oldest was invited to stay with them after living on the streets alone for several years.

It shows the different perspectives of the girls, the youngest who is content with her faith and is 'pure' the fifteen year old who is 'interested' in boys her old age, and wishes that she doesn't have to marry this year, and the seventeen year old, who loves that they have given her a home, but wishes for the outside world.

The book follows along the three girls as they have to make decisions that shape their lives.

*MIGHT CONTAIN SPOILERS*
I read the entire thing this afternoon - and I have to say, though the characters infuriated me at points - I almost wanted to shake them and yell, "HAVE YOU BEEN BRAINWASHED?" "HOW CAN YOU LIVE LIKE THIS?"

Nanette - the youngest, made me infuriated. Wanting to get married at thirteen. Thirteen! I can see it was how she was raised..but still. It's child abuse! You can't 'marry' a thirteen or even a fifteen year old and have a 'relationship' with them - especially when you are so much older - the men they were marrying were older than their fathers.

Errrrrrh. It just made me so mad. I wanted to help the girls, and the book made me feel so hopeless!

*SPOILERS OVER*

Anyway, the writing was great - I couldn't put it down. I would suggest it to anyone to read - I think it's an interesting topic, one that doesn't get enough publicity. It should be read!
